Jan-Carol Publishing, INC congratulates Melissa Snead Wilson as the recipient of the 2018 Believe and Achieve Award for her outstanding submission, Growing Up and Going Back. Melissa Sneed Wilson is a native of Columbia, SC and grew up in Kingsport, TN. Her first screenplay Whose You Are was a semi-finalist for the Kairos Prize for Uplifting Screenplays in 2009. The synopsis of Growing Up and Going Back: Jennifer Johnson left her southern roots behind after college to start over in New York City. Now just shy of turning twenty-nine, Jennifer is let go from her job as a public relations manager and returns to her hometown of Edmonds, Virginia for the summer. Jennifer makes a deal with herself; she will continue freelancing while applying for jobs, and when the summer is up go back to New York City and start a new job there. While flying back to her hometown, Jennifer is seated next to an old friend from high school, Aaron Scott. He doesn't recognize her at first- or so she thinks- as she's changed since their junior year, in more ways than just her physical appearance. Jennifer must learn to readjust to living life under her parents' roof with her younger sister while beginning a new summer job in the most surprising of places.

 Jan-Carol Publishing, INC congratulates Sylvia Weiss Sinclair as the recipient of the 2017 Believe and Achieve Award for her outstanding submission, Fledermama's Son.

 

Sinclair is first generation American on her father’s side, who came from Szatmar, Hungary. Her mother was born of immigrant parents from Austria and Hungary. She was born in Los Angeles, California after World War II, one of the first “Baby Boomers.” She started journaling when she was thirteen and continued throughout her life. Her mother was a story-teller, recounting what life was like raised in Alabama on a farm and about her parents who came from Europe. Sparking interest in family history, she interviewed the oldest members of her family and researched their origins. Putting it all together, she wrote family histories of her mother’s parents for all the relatives on her mother’s side of the family and of course her two brothers and two sons. Fledermama’s Son is her first published novel based on her travels to Romania. She now lives in Bay Minette, Alabama, not far from her maternal grandparents’ farm and all the cousins from her mother’s side of the family.

 Jan-Carol Publishing, INC congratulates Charlotte Snead as the recipient of the 2016 JCP  Believe and Achieve Award for her outstanding submission, A Place to Belong.

 

Charlotte met her husband at Duke University. Married in 1962, they reared six children (four natural, one adopted and one foster daughter). They have eight grandsons, from adults to a toddler. A pro-life leader for many years, Charlotte believes God creates every child. Four of their grandchildren are adopted. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Duke, Charlotte received a Masters of Social Work from the University of North Carolina in 1966. She founded a pregnancy help ministry in 1985, and she’s been a Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) mentor for twenty years. Her experiences as a wife, social worker, mother, pro-life leader, and MOPS mentor contribute to her inspirational fiction.

A Place to Live is one of five novels revolving around teenage girls who live at Hope House, a maternity home in Columbus, Ohio. In this story Laura Morris, a sixteen-year-old girl, is pregnant by her boyfriend, Sam, a football player. Her parents choose abortion, but Laura and Sam know about fetal development and bravely choose life for their baby. The twists and turns of their decision create their journey of this heart felt story. Watch for a 2016 autumn release date.

 

Believe and Achieve Contest

 

 

Are you an aspiring writer, trying to break into the market? This could be your big chance! Jan-Carol Publishing, Inc. is hosting the 2020 Believe and Achieve Novel Award. The new deadline date is May 31st, 2020!

 

One novel will be selected to receive a publishing contract. The contract will include:

 

  • Book Cover Design
  • Professional Editing
  • 3-Year Publishing Contract Paperback edition
  • E-Book edition
  • Entry Deadline: May 31st, 2020. Entry requires a $20 reading fee.
  • One author will be awarded a 3-year publishing contract. Multiple entries are allowed. Each entry must be registered separately with an additional $20 reading fee.

 

Contest Rules:

 

  • Author must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Author must be 21 years old or older.
  • Manuscripts must be a minimum of 45,000 words and not exceeding 60,000 words.
  • No entry will be accepted until the reading fee has been paid.
  • All files must be uploaded in .doc, .docx, or .rtf format.
  • Entries must follow the JCP Manuscript Guidelines.
  • Entries must be made via the online form below only.
  • Entry fees are non-refundable. Once accepted, an author can withdraw from the contest, but the reading fee cannot be refunded.
  • If an author withdraws, or the manuscript is disqualified, the next place winner will be awarded the contract.
  • Author must agree to terms and sign contract for the contract to be valid.
  • By submitting manuscript, author confirms manuscript is original and unpublished.
  • Current JCP, or RHP authors are ineligible.

 

Entry Guidelines:

 

  • Fiction
  • Failure to fully adhere to the entry guidelines will adversely affect the score of the entry.
  • Upload must be one file and contain a cover page, synopsis of 500 words or less, and full manuscript.

 

Manuscripts entries must use the following formats:

 

  • Cover Page
  • Synopsis of 500 words or less

 

The cover page should include the following:

  • Author’s name
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Title of the manuscript
  • Word Count
  • Genre / Category
  • 12 point Times New Roman font
  • Manuscript lines must double-spaced
  • Margins must be 1 inch on both sides, top and bottom. Footer margin should be .5 inches.
  • The author’s name cannot be in the header, footer, or anywhere on the main body of the entry.
